Enjoy wildlife viewing on the Kenai Peninsula

Day 1 — Anchorage to Homer

  • Arrival in Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city located at the base of the Chugach Mountains
  • Check into a late model rental vehicle in Anchorage (vehicle provided with unlimited mileage)
  • Drive the scenic Seward and Sterling Highways down the Kenai Peninsula from Anchorage to Homer (approx. 4 hours drive time)
  • Visit the small mountain community of Girdwood – Take a tour of a historic gold mine and try your luck at gold panning
  • Visit a wildlife conservation center to learn about animal research, conservation, and animal care.
  • Arrive at Homer – a bayside village with fantastic views located on the shores of Kachemak Bay State Park.

Explore Kachemak Bay State Park & Seldovia

Day 2 — Kachemak Bay State Park

  • Enjoy a cruise across Kachemak Bay to the remote wilderness community of Seldovia. A local naturalist will be onboard to help with wildlife viewing and natural history information. Enjoy exploring Seldovia, which is only accessible by boat or bush plane, then enjoy a return cruise to Homer with stops along the way to enjoy wildlife viewing.

Explore the Kenai Wildlife Refuge & Skilak Lake

Day 3 — Homer to Seward

  • Drive from Homer to Seward ( approx. 3.5 hour drive)
  • Explore the Kenai Wildlife Refuge – Enjoy wildlife viewing and day hiking
  • Arrive into the picturesque small bayside village of Seward – the gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park
  • Join a local musher for a sled dog tour. Experience riding behind a team of sled dogs while getting an in-depth look at their training grounds and learning about the musher’s way of life. Enjoy a visit and interact with adorable sled dog puppies.

Visit the Kenai Fjords National Park

Day 4 — Kenai Fjords National Park

  • Enjoy a full day of wildlife and glacier viewing aboard a high-speed catamaran – explore Resurrection Bay and the Kenai Fjords National Park with a National Park Ranger on board – a deli-style lunch and hot beverages provided
  • In the early evening explore the Caines Head Trail where is is common to see Bald Eagles and Marine Wildlife along the shores of Resurrection Bay

Experience a glacier landing on Denali

Day 5 — Seward to Talkeetna

  • Tour the Alaska Sealife Center, one of Alaska’s most extensive marine wildlife research centers
  • Drive from Seward to Talkeetna ( approx. 4 hours drive )
  • Visit Portage Glacier Valley and the Begich Boggs Visitor Center
  • Arrive in Talkeetna, located on the south side of Denali – a quaint historical bush town known for its famous bush-plane flights to Denali and mountain climbing community
  • Flightsee Denali on a 1.5 hour tour – Experience a Glacier Landing on Mt Denali

Day 6 — Alaska Railroad - Hurricane Train

  • Explore the history of Talkeetna on a walking tour and visit the local museum.
  • Pick up your made-to-order lunch from the Talkeetna Roadhouse
  • Ride the historic Alaska Railroad roundtrip on a flag-stop train to the homestead community of Hurricane (a 6 to 7 hour tour)

Drive the scenic Parks Highway

Day 7 — Talkeetna to Denali

  • Enjoy full mountain views of the Alaska Range and Denali as you drive the beautiful Parks Highway from Talkeetna to Denali (approx. 2.5-hour drive)
  • Drive the first 15 miles of the Denali National Park Road to Savage River, where it is common to see Moose, Caribou, Dall Sheep and Grizzly Bears.
  • Take a 3.5-hour tour in the Denali backcountry traveling in a horse-drawn covered wagon – enjoy a wilderness BBQ gourmet meal (all-you-can-eat dinner)

Spend the day exploring Denali National Park

Day 8 — Denali National Park

  • Watch a Denali Nat’l Park Ranger sled-dog presentation to learn about managing the park during the winter season
  • Pick up a picnic backpack lunch for your day in Denali National Park
  • Spend the day exploring Denali National Park- ride the transit bus on a 6-hour tour. Enjoy extensive wildlife viewing and beautiful scenery at your own pace.

Spend time exploring the historic side of Anchorage

Day 9 — Denali to Anchorage

  • Drive the Parks Highway from Denali to Anchorage – enjoy another opportunity to explore the many sites on this scenic drive (approx. 4 hours of drive time)
  • Enjoy wildlife viewing and beautiful scenery in Denali State Park
  • Enjoy lunch at the McKinley View Lodge Cafe
  • Ride the Anchorage Trolley to visit historical locations throughout downtown Anchorage
  • Return rental vehicle, transportation provided to the Anchorage Airport
